LAST OF THE WARRIORS
Pokai Atua Passes On The ranks of old-time Maoris are gradually dwindling and on Sunday tlio death oocurred at Taranaki of Pokai Atua, a veteran of tbe Maori wars and oue of tbe oldest natives at Paribaka Pa. Aged 94, Pokai Atua had had a long and eventful life, and his passing will be marked by a great tangi that will draw Maoris to Parihaka from all parts of New Zealand. Pokai Atua was a member of tbe Ngatire Nui (Hawera tribe) and b° had lived practically all his life at Paribaka. For many years he was a follower of Tohu and Te Whiti, and in tbc Maori wars was consjpicuous for his br avery and fighting ability. He was at Panhaka oii the occasion of the historic attack. and_ i'ought in manv other battles. He was one of the last of the oldtime Maoris and a great feast had been ulauned to take jalace at Paribaka in Septeinber ui bis honour and to proelaim him as an exainple to the younger members of the race. Tribes in every part oF the country were to be represeuted in payiug burnage to a great old man. Now they will come sadly to i mourn his passing.
