ELIMINATION OF CROSSINGS
Overhead Bridges And Deviations SEVEN J0BS IN HAND Seven works, entailing overhead bridges or deviations for the elimination of level-crossings in the No. 5 Main Highways District, are now in band or shortly to be commenced, and it is anticipated that all of them will be completed by the end of the present financial year. Five of the crossing elimination works are on the Na-pier-Palmerston North main highway, where, in addition, the renewal of a number of one-way bridges and old bridges is also being undertaken, according to information given at the meeting of the No. 5 District Highways Council in Napier last evening. The following crossing elimination works have been approved: — (1) A deviation at Oringi North and the construction of an overhead bridge in the elimination of the Tahoraite crossing, has been" in progress for some time. (2) An overhead bridge is now in the course of construction north of Waipukurau (3) Work on the Maharahara deviation, by which two crqssings are to be eliminated entirely, is now almost completed, and road will be put into use for traific almost immediately. When the road has become sufficiently consolidated it will be sealed. (4) Work is shortly to be put in hand for the construction of an overhead bridge at Papatawa, near Woodville. , (5) A deviation south of Woodville at the Mangamania crossing entailing the erection of one overhead crossing bridge and a bridge over the stream in the vicinity. This work will considerably improve the alignment of the highway in this locality, where previously the traffio bridge had a difficult right angle turn at its approach. The above works are all on the Napier-Palmerston North State highway. (6) On the .Waipukurau-Matamau main highway, via Hatuma, it is proposed to erect an overhead bridgie near Kopua. (7) Provision has also been made for an overhead bridge at Whakatu on the Farndon-Paki Paki. via Stortford Lodge main highway.
