Chamber of Commerce Discussions

. "SIMPLE SIMON."

Sir, — It would be refreshing if at some time that which calls itself the Hastings Chamber of Commerce could find some real business to report other than grumbling. What civie pride to suggest that in Hastings we should emulate Adelaide, and build in our beautiful town houses at £450 each. How nice a few rows of these little warrens would look round the Civic Square, with lit.tle cast-iron railings separating each front door, which would be the entrance to a passage leading out to a back-yard Scarcely big enough to prepare a "hand-made milkshake." One advantage such housing would ■ have — it would be convenient to the shopping centre. It was really too bad of the Government to raise wages, so that the workers bought up merchants' stoeks so fast that the factories could not supply new etoclcs fast enough to keep the business going. . Let us hope that the Associated Chambers will relieve the depression that aff-licts the n embers of our local chamber and also put the union secretaries right regarding union members' fees, and so become worthy distributors of produce and exehange. — Yours, etc.,

Hastings, July 20/37.
