ij. . m The. foRowiug reference to the death o£ Mr. H. J. Russell is made in the anuual report of the Hawke's Bay War Relief Association: — -"Your executive records with deepest regret the death of Mr, H. J. Russell on May 20, 1937. Applications for the position of seeretary were called on 15/2/1916, and in dealing with the applications the committee took into consideratiou the fact that Mr. Russell was a returned soldier, having served through the South African war, enlisting as a trooper, and being promotod to flie rank of captaiu, and he was appointed to the position of secretary to the association at the meeting of the executive held on February 29, 1916. f 'During his 21 years of service, Mr. Russell was known by War Relief Associations throughout New Zealand as one who always had the interests of the returned soldier at heart. His kindly cousideration. his adviee and general business ability, were eagerly so^ught by those who cajled upon this association for help. The policy o± thjs association has always been wisely directed by him, and his eourteous manner, fine personality and just deah ings in aU matterp coucerning this association and the ex-servicemen will ever be gratefully remembered. "
