TERRIFIC' BATTLE NEAR MADRID
- v (Received 20, 8.45 a.m.)' MADRID, July 19. A terrific battle to the north-west of Madrid is believed to he the last effort of the rebels to regain the lost ground. It is unaerstood that thousands have been killed on both sides. On the anniversary of the outbreak of the war the rebels launehed 100 tanks and 20,000 men in an attaek on Brunete to the westward of Madrid. Meanwhile the biggest air battle ln modern warfare was fought overhead, the rebels flying 100 warplanes opposing 60 loyalist fighters.' The rebels lost eighteen planes and the loyalists four. Loyalist airmen claim that they brought down seven Fiats, one Heinkel and' two Junkers in one action. Loyalist infantrymen withstanding the worst artillery and. air bomhardment in the war mowed down the advaneing Moroccans 'and foreign troops. Casualties are estimated at 5000.
