NOTES AND COMMENTS

'The Barb").

(By '

Mrs. M. E. Donne has decided to retire her well-known racing maro, Lavina, from the racing track and send her to the stud. Lavina, from her two-year-old days, has been very popular with race-goers. She was seldom out of a place, and won stalces amounting approximately to £2000. She has won from four furlongs to seven. She just failed to make the first grade among the sprinterfl, but won at "Wanganui as well as at Awapuni. She is to be mated with Mr. F. B. Donnelly 's recent importation, the grey stallion, Theio. * # # Huntjng Cat has been brought ie from Mr O. Nelson 's farm, where he has' been doing haclc worlc for some time. It will be recollected that he went amiss on the eve of last New Zealand Cup meeting, when it was considered he had an excellent chance in that event. He is back again with his old trainer, G. W. B. Greene. # # # The Ooelcpit — Hinelcapua bay gelding was brought in the other morning from the same farm and given a pop over a few hurdles. For a beginner he went quite well. This four-year-old is the ideal stamp of steepleehaser. # # * • Padisliah went amiss at the last Wellington meeting, his knees being the trouble. He has been slightly blistered and turned out on Mr. J. A. Hennah's farm, where he will romain for at least a month. a * • H. Griffith is graduallv getting a strong teain together, and has been given Pladie to prepare for future events. This trainer had charge of the Paladin gelding when J. M. Cameron toolc Only One to Australia last, autumn, and during that time won a doublo and a second at the Nelson meeting. • • # Lady Chat, the rising two-year-old by Nigger Minstrel from Table Tallt, has wintered well, and is now pleasing in the manner in which she is striking out in her paee work on tlie Hastings tracks. PoSsessing a sweet, smooth action, as well as being a good looker, this filly will disappoint her owner, Mr ITull, if she does not turn out above tlie average. * • • Tho other morning the Tidal— Sweet Sne anrl the Htinting Song— -Tractrix fillies, both owned by Mr. W. Ian Hamilton and trained by W. D. Young, were sent along against the bit for about a furlong and a-half. Both hit out freely and with determination. • * # Journot is at present wearing p, bandago on his near fore-log> but

tvalks and worlcs quite soundly. He is to be got ready for the Grand National, an event he fell in last season. His st&ble compaiiion, Tiger Gain, looks in great heart, and in all probability will be J oiivnet 's travelling companion to Riccarton next month. & * * At the- present time H. S. Greene, at Greenmeadows, has the largest team in ■ active commission in Hawke's Bay, with. nineteen under his charge. # # « A eonple of months back Tycoon met with a serious accident when he came in contact with a wire fence, and was on the point of being destroyed. He is now walking and cantering round his paddock apparently quite sound, so it is possible he will race again. * # • Blue Tiger, on the last day at Wel lington, injured a knee, but he has made a full recbvery. He was not brought back to Hastings after Trentham, and on Thursday will be taken down to Riccarton. * # • A few Of the Hastings-trained horses will go to the Rangitikei Hunt meeting for Saturday 's races, and next week a fair contingent from here and Greenmeadows will malte the Gisborne trip.
