(Eeeeived 19, 8.45 a.m.) WASHINGTON, July 18. The Secretary of State, Mr Cordell Hull, in a statement, without naming any cpuntry but obviously directed at China and Japan, said that war in the Far East was impossible without encroaching on American and cfther interests. * It is understood that earlier in the ffay the Chinese Ambassador requested the United State to invoke the Nine Power Treaty against Japan. In his statement Mr Hull reiterated Ihe traditional American foreign policy and concluded: "We will avoid entering alliances or entangling commitments, but believe in a co-operative eir'ort bv peaceful means." The New York Times' Washington correspondent §ays that it is not believed that the IJnited States will take direct action over the Chinese appeal under the Nine-Power Treaty at prefcent.
