High Fines Threatened

AUOKLANP, Thjs Daj. An indication that the fines for Sunday trading would be- considerably increased if the offence showed no signs of abating under the present scsfte of fines was given by Mr C. R. Grr Walker, S.M., in the Police Court, when shopkeepers wero prosecuted. Sub-inspector Eox said that in spite of the fact that upward of 100 prosecutions had been instituted withiu tlie last 12 months the practice had continued and further prosecutions were pending. The coniplaints had been received by the police from the grocers, tobacconists and fruiterers' asaociation. "The matter has become really serious," said "Sub-inspector Fox, "prosecutions and fines have apparent Ly had no effect in stopping this illegal practice."
