WILSON CUP GOLF

Napier Beat Wanganui H0LDERS' SEC0ND PLAY Nv&ngei.nui made a bid over "ene woodend to recover the Wilson Cup but f ailed in .the attftaipt, the holders retaining the trophy by eight matches to four. The Waiohiki course received a thovough wetfcing on Friday night and during the nest 24 hours, but made a wonderful rceovery and was in ideal condition for the "hot" golf , Which was a feature of the contest. Match play as a rule does not lend itself to low scoring, but iu the matches at Waiohiki there were many fine eards, the best being a couple of 71 '& by Eussell Hobbs who was right on his game. Another great round was that^ of Hugh Crosse, "who in his match against Jack Goss — both of them ex-champions of New Zealand — recorded a 73, Goss • doing a 74. _ Brian Silk went aown agamst Hobbs and .things just would not go right for him. Hobbs was 4 up at the turn and at the 10th Silk rau down a pntt for a birdie 3 and a win. 'At the next hole (460 yards). Silk's second fmished at fcke back of the green, while Hobbs' was out to the right and a couple oi chains short. It looked as if Silk was going to stage that characteristic finish which has made him such a hard man to beat. Hobbs, with the game apparently swingiug away from him, then played a xeal mateh-winner, his xun-up shot finishing near ihe pin. Silk's putt was dead on the line, but stopped a yard short, and when Hobbs sank his for a birdie 4, Silk had to sink his for a half. He missed and Hobbs was 4 up again and definitely in eommand. He continued to play scintillatifig golf and there was no holding him. He was back in 34, two strokes better than Harold Davies was round in 74 to beat Y. B. Howarth, and his club-mate, Hutchinson, was two over fours When ^ his game against Harrison ended. ^ Playing against Silk and Goss m thc Eour-ball, Bussell Hobbs and Ewan Troutbeek turned on a best ball of ^68 with a phenomenal outward half of oi.
