Newcastle Defeated in Close Game NEWCASTLE," July 18. .The New Zealand hockey team defeated Newcastle by three goals to two • on Saturday. In view of the visitors' iudifferent showing in the previous games it was anticipated Newcastle would win, but New Zealand although below internatlonal standard recorded a one-goal victory. The local side were last and scientific and could press interState teams, but New Zealand, thanks to Clark and Mahcney, repulsed their clangerous attacJcs. The New Zealand forwards were weak on attack and Duffield and Monteith were ".the only men to break Newcastle 's defence. Through his spiendid understanding Clark, the New Zealand full-back, was the outstanding man on the field. At half-time New Zealand led 2 to ,nil. Newcastle were dangerous after rthe interval, and Smellie, the New Zoa-. lland goalkeeper, xepelled six shots, ikicking.with rare judgment. Newcastle scored twice in an exciting finish. ■ For New Zealand goals' were scored [by Duffield (2) and Monteith (1). Reid j and Gunn scored for Newcastle.
