Monthly Meeting of the Council The monthly meeting of the council oi .the Hastings Distriet Scots' Society was held on Wednesday evening iu Mr. J. W. Shaw's residencet Knight street, Hastings. Chief P. J. Priest presided over Chieftains E. V. Simpson, J. S. Storer. J. Ramsay and JW. Shaw and a full attendance of councillors. Pipe Band-secretary W. McMillan reported that the weekly practices of the band were being well atendted. About 12 learners were making satisfactory progress and woftld soon be joining the band. He stressed the need for new uniforms and pipes to equip the band fully. Final arrangements were made for the Pipe Band ball. It was reported tliat McKay's old-time orehestra had been engaged and a programme of cldtime and Scottish dancing had been arranged. The supper and decoration committ?e reported that arrangements were well in hand. From other reports received it was considered that the attendance would surpass -last year' s ball anii that a substantial addition to the uniform fund would be made. A letter was received from tlie Mayor, Mr. G. A. JMaddisou, wishiag the function every success. In the unavoidable absence of Mr. Maddison the deputy-Mayor, Mx. A. I. Rainbow, has consented to attend and open the ball. Other matters of interest to the society were dealt with and qighteen uew members wero accepted, the chiei commenting 011 the heaitliy position oi the uiembership and rcmpxbing that this year would probably be a record one.
