ENGLISH TEAM FOR THE TEST

Uiuted Press Association

Bowlers Strengthened : BatsMen Retained BROWN A SURPRISE (From the Speoial Correspondent of the

with the Team.)

(Beceived 17, 8.45 a.ffi.) SUNDEELAND, July 16. For the second cricket test between England and New Zealand at Man* chester, the English selectors have made an obvions attempt to strengthen attack by dropping Voce, GOWer and Yerity and Substituting Wellard, Smith, Goddard and BfOWn. Wellard and Smith are both fine faat* medium paee bowlers. Neither is quite so speedy as the Surrey expfess bowler Gowor, or the Kentish schoolmaster, Farnes. The latter is not available for the match at Manchester. Neither Verity nor Langridge have bfien ehosen. England has no left* hand bowler. Goddard 'ss selection threatens the tourists' battlng success for throughout the tour they have shown uncertainty against Well-controlled offspinners. Brown's inclnsiott is a sur* prise even after his success in the Gontlemen v. Players match. He play* ed against New Zealand' in 1931 and tomed Australia and New Zealand with D, B. Jardine's team. In his few ap* poarances this season. he was very sueceKsi'ui with leg-breaks and googlies against Yorkshire. It is probable that Goddard and Brown will both play if the for&cast is for changeable weather. If the wea* thei is fine and the wicket hard, it is ^ likely that the seleetors will omit Goddaid. The seleetors show that they have satisfied with the batting by retaining Hutton, Barnett, Hammond, Hardstalf, 1'aynter, Parks and Ames, who have strengthened an already strong batting side, including successful hard hitteis Brown, Wellard and Smith. The New Zealand team Will not be pmked nntil tho inorning'of the match. Tihdill is visiting his wife's relatives 3ii Ireland and the hard-worked Cowie is spehding a holiday in Scotland. Carson, who is 21 to-day, is ceiebrating his birthay by crossmg the border of England and Scotland.
