False Declaration for Relief "DELIBERATE CASE"

AUCKLAND, Last Night. A'fin'e of '£100 and costs was imposed by Mr. Orr Walker, S.M., in the Police Court to-day when Joseph Hood was charged with malring a false statement Tinder the Employment Promotion Act. A Department of Labour official taid that "Hood registered in 1931 as a married mkn.' In June of last year he and a woman he had been living with went to England. On his return he immediately registered for relief again, describing himself as married, At -no time did Hood disclose what amount of money was held by the woman with whom he lived, the official stated, adding that Hood received £100 in excess of what he was entitled to. Counsel for Hood said that defendant was previously a ship's steward but had heen unable t0 obtain employment for tix years. "It seems to be a very deliberate case," said the Magistrate in imposing the fine.
