BECAME A STAR AT 42 YEARS OF AGE

B. P. Schulberg is known in Hollywood as the producer who has dis- ! covered and brought to fame inoro screen stars than any man in the industry, but Jiis most remarkable discovery was Edward Aruold, who happened to be a stage actor of 28 years' experience and apparently past the age of picture stardom. Arnold was playing a featured role in "Whistling ^in 'tlie Dark", a travelling stage attraction at the Belasco Theatre in Los Angeles, when tlie astute Schulberg spotted and signed him immediately to a long-term contraet. Having nothing important for him, the producer lent him out to play opposite Joan Crawford in "Sadie McKee," and Arnold became picturefamous overnight. That was four years ago, and the star is now 46 years old. Unlike so many actors who have been catapulted to stardom, be is that rarify a contented and grateful man. "1 have known hard knocks and plenty of poverty all my life," says the man who was born Gountber Schneider jn a New York East Side tenement. Arnold owns his own house — no estater— but a large, comfortable inexpensive house in Beverley Hills. He driyes a modest car, and spends wbat little spare time be gets between pictures in motor trips with his wife and family of three children. He is a typical family man. His latest * film is "John Meade's Lady."
