Occupants of House Have Narrow Escape

WAIPUKURAU, This Day. Nothing but the chimneys were leffe of a nine-roomed house owned by Mr. Charles Smith, senr., and situated near Ashley Clinton, after fire had swept through it in the early hours of yesterday morning. The occupants included Mr. and Mrs. Smith, a daugbter, a nephew, and a maid, and they had. a narrow escape from being burned to death. When the maid discovered the fire the house was well alight. She'lost no time in arousing the sleepers, who left the building in their night clothes, Mrs. Smith re-entered her room in order to obtain something of particular , value and was almost overcome, , receiving burns on the head. apd severe shock, ' necessitating her adiiiiissioii to the Waipukurau hospital. The maid, who was sleeping in tho. rear part of the buxlding, discovered the outbreak about 4wo o'clock. The cause is. not known. Attempting to save the house was hopeless but the .outbuildings were saved.
