Prisoners Sentenced At Christchurch

CHEISTCHUECH, This Day. For failing to stop after an accident, William Henry Tyler; aged 25, was sentenced to one ihonth's gaol and was prohibited from driving for five years by Mr Justice Northeroft in the Supreme Court this morning. "This case has caused a good deal of distress to me, for, like most offenders for this class of offence, your intent was not criininally vieious," said the Judge. "A deterrent is needed. As recOntly as last year, the Legislature, voicing tlie demand of the public, made this offence much more serious tlian formerly, allowing ior five years' imnrisonment. " For making a false declaration under the Marriage Act, Arthur Middleton Leggett, aged 48, a earpenter, was sentenced to nine months' imprisoninent. The offence closelv approximated to bigamy, said the Judge, and was committed with the intention of facilitatirig marriage.
