Hawke's Bay Hunt

■'The Barb.")

ANNUAL MEETING Review of Saturday's Fields GOOD SPORT ASSURED

(By '

The annual race meeting of the | Hawke's feay Kimt takes place on j the -Hastings raceconrse to-morrow with the acceptances denoting a j fine afternoon's sport. The Hawke's ! Bay Hunt is one of the very few that were racing over forty years ago and stiil survive, With eyen fields, both in quality and guantity, the racing should be really good and draw a large attendance. The track is in excellent order, being firm with no. bone, so should suit the big majority of the runners. Betting will again be of the single pool. The . Government Railway buses from Napier will run to the course ahd leave again after the last race. Between the second and third events a two-year-old parade will be staged, with' some very fine yoimgsters starting. Following is a' review of the fields: — 12.0: OTANE HACK AND HUNTEES ' HURDLES, Contact in his last two gallops hafe. attracted attention, showing something like his old dash. Being a clever f eneer and with a track made to order for him, he should go his . besfc race eince wuiming early. in; June at Napier. A new-comer to this department is Wero hia, he has been schooled regularly of late but lacks confidence and is greatly in need of racing experience. Iddo will have a track more to his liking than the heavy holdmg course of last week at Trentham— his gallop yesterday morning- was a . mOst attractive one. Top Hat has speed as well as being a fast jumper, but he still runs about and riders in the race would be well advisod to keep on the outside of this big gelding at his fences. 'Salon is well spoken of and, having had tWo to three season's hunting-field experience has jumping ability. Sibyl Song's recent exploits have not been encouraging. Agog is a doubtful starter after Thureday morning 's mishap. Begorrah is on the improve, but Master Hector can scarcely be fancied on his last effort here. The favourite may come from IDDO, CONTACT and SALON.

12.40: OKAWA MAlDEN. Mon Aee has racing experience, but his form is nothing to write home about. Still the experience may pull him through. Marching On is undoubtedly on the improve and will have to be given an outside chunce. Second at the Park last monih gives Seattle a chance, though without any.strong recommendation. Seaeourt was fourth at Dannevirke but should have been either first or second and having done well since attracts attention. Mona Lisa has only been going so-«o. Oha has yet to show something that she could be backed on, but Tfiplex was second at Dannevirke, so will 'doubtless be one of the selections., Reasonable, one ofMr. Twist's, is backward. Daryiil (Lapidary— Lady Comet) in his last two track gallops registered fast enough tinie3 to be considered. Zilpah, a two-year-old chestnut filly by Rabbi — Iciogne, has speed for a few furlongs, but is not as forward as the majority of her opponents. Thala, by Arausio, from the Limond— Saiute mare, Courtesy, will have to be taken into consideration. Form may make tbo iavourites TEIPLEX, SEACOURT and THALA. 1.20: H.B. HUNT CUP STEEPLECHASE.

Miss Pango ran a very fair race recently in a similar eyent at Awapuni to tire only oyer the .last two or three furlongs and that race is bound to have done the mare good. Dozie has not been racing at ail well of late. Kykemist, on last; H.B. Steepleehase form woulct be a good thing, but his two races^ since then have been most disappointing. Cotefield, carryiug 121b. more tlian now, was third last year in this race to Boyal Songster, and Given looks well and; with a track to his ldking, is sure to make the race interesting. The Ranger is as gopd a fencer as one would wish to see and in. his last effort was only narrowly beaten into second place by Tangled, «o the Manawatii-owned and trained gelding is going to have friebds a-plenty tomorrow. Unfortunately Count Willonyx ■mjured himself the other mornina and is a very doubtful starter— his recent form has been very fair— a second when carrying 141bs. overweight in the Dannevirke Hunt Cup Steepleehase and a runaway victory xii the open point-to-point at. Mangateretere. Paitutu is a splendid. fencer — his only asset. Eido.i may be reserved for the Plat. The map.ner in which Phrenology recently t^on at point-to-point suggests his being a possibility— on Tuesday morning he gave a splertdid display over a roundof the eountry at Greenmeadows, impressing as a mosfc likely sort among the light-weights. Sabatini and Offa nre good jumperS' in the hunting field, so should give their supporters a run for their Jiibney. 'Whai will carry mor,:i monev than THE RANGER, WYIvE" MIST and MISS PANGO? 2.0: RIVERSLEA HACK HANDIOAP. J . An even lot with nothing outstanding. Trailer is a very fair middle-diataiico hack, but 9.12 will test him. Umpire, at l21bs. less, won at Dannevirke from a fair field. Hamarin looks really well, but ia her last two track gallops .went 1

poorly, but condition and carrying only lOlbs. above the minimum may pull her through. Tractile is due any day now and will have a poorer lot to contend with than at Wellington. Blue Shirt went a faiir race the last day at Trentham, so may be a surprise to-morrow. Clavercourt has yet to fill even a minor place, while Helios's form this last twelve months has been poor. Three that may appeal to backers are UMPIRE, HAMARIN and TRACTILE. 2.40: SOUTRA HUNTERS ' FLAT. Mercian Prince holds pride of placo on the correct card but will hardly maintain that position in the betting. Aube ran away with a simiiar event at Dannevirke, but tho following week was . "down the straight" in tho hunters' flat at Awapuni. In the same mood as at Dannevirke he may be very tough. Cletrac won easily at Awapuili, so will be in favour. Thrasher has done all his preparation on his owner 's farm at Otane and, not having raced for eighteen months or so,' may be at a disadvantage. Laughing Lad is a newcomer and may be a dark horse. The present intention is to start Phrenology in the Hunt Cup, but, of course, he may be brought out again. Eidos looks an improved horse since Ieaving Hastings. Skerryvore (late Paugha Ballaugh) is a three-year-old by Coekpit from Sinella. He was second m the open point-to-point to Count Willonyx recently and showed pace. Conveyor ds a half-brother, by Tractor, to Lun.a Lux, and Without racing experience, but bred as he is, will have to be given a chance. This is the best field this event has drawn for some time and amateur rid'ers should have a cldso go, while tho best backed look like 3.20: WAITANGI HANDICAP, tt Hack conditions. Colleen Gain ineets the eye as bedng at her best and, as her recent form lias been encouraging, she will- probably be: one of the favourites. Marsyas at the last Hastings meeting ran two clinking good races, but found the company at Trentham a little too slick. Buster Brown is no more than an outside possibility, .judging on his recent private and pubIdc form. Blite Shirt is likely to contest the mile hack. Okawa has been Withdrawn. Parry might surprise. Seattle is passed over in favour of another lightweiglit, Pukehou. Most support may be forthcoming for COLLEEN GAIN, MARSYAS and BUSTER BROWN. '

4.0: T1KIKINO HANDICAP. The only open rac& on the programme. Shu pulled up very lame 011 'l'uesday morning and it is very doubtful if he will start. Kahikatoa is showing a Httle improvement of late, but the old fellow is a little too slow in finding his feet over, the first part of a sprint. distance and, if he is to win another race, it will probably be over a longer course. . Hunter 's Morn, we all know, can gallop, but how will he Start? Slippery has been in work but a short "While. Blygadn, at the last Tace meeting at Hastings, separated Ben Braggie and Peter Beckford at the linish, so she has only to be in the same form, and she looks it, to have a royal chance to-morrow. Sir Nigel is galloping well enough to suggest being dangerous, but his form of late has been heart-breaking. Solaria works very short in front, but has been that way for some time — he was fourth to Ben Braggde, Blugain and Peter Beckford in his last effort. Quake, at the mifiimum, may tear another one off but Tres Sec will find six and a-half furlougs hardly far enough. Galloping very well at present is Bunfight, but her form does not point to her winning, though she may belie that form. Recovery may be looked for from BLYGAN, BUNEIGHT and SOLARIA.
