Substantial Increase At Home

RUGBY, July 14. Another substantial increase in the mercantile tonnage under construction in United Hingdom shipyards was shown in the return for the quarter endcd June 30 issued by Lloyds' Eogister. The present total of 1,199,973 tons is an increase of 1S5,519 on that of the preceding quarter and is the liighost quarterly total rctux-ncd in tho last seven years. Britain is building more tonnago than tho aggregate now under construction in Germany, .Japan, United Statcs and Holland, whiclx aro the four lcadxng countries abroad. Dux-xng the last three xnonths British yards begau worls on 367,693 tons of new nierchant vcsscls, an increase of 114,205 tons comparcd with thc prcvious quarter. Tho total tonnage now under construction in othor countrics is 1,6S2,8S7 tons, about 245,000 tons above thc Mareh iigurc. Leading couutrics arc: Germany, 4JG,SS1 tons; Japan, 31S,277; Gnitcd States, ,19S^632; Holland, 1SS,-164; Sweden, 133,720. Of the world 's total of 2,SS2,S60 toxis now under construction, -British shipyards are ' building 41.6 per ccnt.
