WIN FOR HASTINGS
Sub-Union Representatives Down Central H.B. TWO-POINT MARGIN Stepping out for the first time this seasctn the Hastings Bugby Football Sub-Union representatives scored a narrow victory at Nelson Paik, Hastings, yesterday afternoon when they defeated Central Hawke's Bay by 13 points to 11. The game was not a particularlv good exhibition, except for the second half of the second spell, when both sides were more enterprising and threw the ball about more than was the ca.se earlier in the game. The teams were as follow; — Central H.B. — Rupuha; Ferguson, Murray, Smith, Price, A. Aldrich; R. I Aldrich; Green, Benson, L. Thomson; Beale, MeGlashan, , R. Reid, C. Wilson; A, Walson, Hastings.— Jackson; Kangi Joil, Devine, Walford; P. Reid, C. Joll; Tomoana; Tait, Denton, "Wright; G-reening, J. Thompsont L. "Wilson, Ford; Asliman. The southerers were oarly on' the attack, Smith, on the right wing, flashiug along the side line but his cross-kick was taken by Devine for a force-down. The ensuing play for a time was con(jned to the forwards near the half-way, with Central holding a territorial advantage. Both sides endeavoured to open up the game, but the liandling was poor on the part of the home backs, with Reid the main offender. Good spoiling work broke down the opposition back movements but for all that Murray and Ferguson came very close to getting through the home defence after a bright passing bout. Then followed an excifcing period during which there were several bright individual breaks by the forwards of both isides, Greening, Ford for Hastings, and Beale for Central being prominent. The succession of breaks terminated in Smith giving chase to a kick throngh to beat the opposition and score, a tackle by Walford bringing hiin down just on the goal-line. A. Aldrich converted.— Central H.B. 5, Hastings 0. The home side rallied well, and forwards with L. Wilson, Ford and Ashman taking leading parts pressing hard. 1 From a line-out Tomoana sent a long pass tp Reid, who made amends for his « earlier poor handling by neatly sidestepping his way through the opposition to score a good try. Jackson failed to convert. — Hastings 3, Central H.B. 5. A few minutes later C. Wdlson retired owing to au injured knee and was replaced by Rasmussin. The play was even and rather ragged, neither side playing part/cularly well as a team. Gradually Central attacked, the forwards presfcing hard to give thoir backs a fair amount of the ball, but they were well bustled by the home forwards, who, in the open, were superior. Territorially Central contdnued to have
fche better of the game though they were not dangerous. A penalty goal was narrowly missed by A. Aldrich, then Central made a determined efforl all along the goal-front to iind an opening and eventually Benson and Green paved the way for R. Aldrich to make a nice cut-in and score. A1 Aldrich failed to convert and the interval found the score reading: Central H.B 8 Hastings 3 Immediately upon resnniption Hastings were on the atteck, Jackson landing a "poster" with a free kick but within two minutes a combined move.lnent ended in Devine getting oVer near the posts for 0. Joll to convert. — Hastings 8, Central H.B. 8. • During the succeeding ten minutes Central were on the defence except for one brief break, Hastings setting flie pace and providing an improved display, especially among the backs. Determined tackling and hard work by the forwards, who used thetr feet to good advantago, prevailed and a spirited break by the southern forwards lcd Rasmussen passing to A. Aldrich and to Green, the last-named seoring a splendid try. A. Aldrich failed to convert. — Central H.B. 11. Hastings 8. The onsu'ing play was bright and open, with tho teams talcing it in turns to indulge in sweeping rusiies. A nice passing bout initiated by Tomoana saw Reid cut-in beautifully and hand over to Wilson and Ford, the last-mentioned Bcoring between the posts for C. Joll to convert. — Hastings lo, Central H.B. n. Following this reverse the visitors commenced to spread themselves. Throwing the ball about in great style, they provided the crowd with plenfcy of excitement, the game taking on a new lease, but the home defence held and for the third time this season Central H.B. went down with their own parfcicular score being at 11, the final count reading: Hastings 13 Central H.B, 11 Mr. J. Geenty, of Hastings, was referee.
