Call for Change

B.B.

,S.

Sir,— Your reforenee to Mr BarUaXd in last evening 's leading article^ is xnisleading as to Mr Barnard's meaning. When are all the mistakes to be cut out of your paper? "When is the personnel of the Hawke's Bay County Council to be changed? WheU men were only receivmg a pittance for their labour, surely one could only expeet "scroungers." The initiating of relief schemes was the f orerunner of the present business of sustenance. Some years ago— -about the time Dickens street in Napier was widened — I wrota to your paper about widening Heretaunga street. When the 'quake came, what a splendid opportunity was lost. I expect filthy lucre was the cause. Money is the master, all right. Mr Editor, if I go on much more like this you Will ptobably be teminded of an old correspondent, L.W.F., to your uatier.-— Yours. etc..

Hastings, July 14, 1937. [Mr Barnard has denounced tha actions of organised labour in striking, and threatening to strike, in defiance ' of law. He saysU "The point ds whether they are not assisting to dlslodge the Labour Government by hasty words and threats." Our editoriai comment .drow 1 attention to Mr Barnard's statement 1 and mentioned that he was doing no more than warn union leaders that the 1 Labour Government 's existence was dependent upon the good conduct of ' organised labour. The warping ^ ds timely, and there is nothing misleading L in our having emphasised it. "B.B.S." is commendably brief in his letter. He need not fear that he will ever rival * the old-time correspondent whose ' memory is honoure.d among the members ' of Our staff who can recall hie lively ; tilting. His views on some present-day ' topies would be refreshing. — Editor.]
