New Zealand a Land of Smiling Faces TALK TO BRITISH LABOUR
IBy Telegraph-
LONDQN, June 23. "At last something has bees* done for those down below. We have put New Zealand on its feet again." Mr Michael Savage, the first Socialist Lremier of New Zealand, who leaves for home to-morrow, nttered these words in saying good-bye to the Labour party, which gave him a dinner. Mr Clement Attlee presided and Mr ErnestBevin proposed Mr Savage 's health. "We were told that the 40-hour week, before we introduced it, was the way to destruction," said Mr Savage. "All I know is there are more smiling faces in New Zealand than I have ever seen in my 30 years there. "Try to do in England what we are, doing. You will find the people behind you. "Only ,by raising wages can yon build up trade. "I wouldn't sacrifice the British farmer or the New Zealand farmer. If you pay the workman what he deserves, then he can buy from both. "I have tried to tell people in high places that defence is not sufficient-^ that we must remove the causes of war. iJeople in high places talk about everything except those. "If the people of Britain got anything like what they are capable of producing, this country would be a Paradise. "In 18 months, the Labour Government of New Zealand, which has a population of only 1,500,000, including Maoris, has increased' the buying power •of the workers by £14,000,000. We may be a small country, but we have big ideas. --\Vages had been xeduced. We reduced the prices. "The best New Zealand can produce is good enough for the citizens of the country. . . . " If I cannot live for the purposes of service, it is better that I should die. "If the British Commonwealth of Nations is to. live, we have to do it together. "Begin at home — we have begun. "
