COMING-OF-AGE SOCIAL EVENING
Last evening the resi.dence of Mr and Mrs S. Geake, 1024 Heretaunga street, was the venue for a very pleasant surprise coming-of-age evening' tor Miss Jean Hayward. Misa Edna Geake was responsible for the evening, and every credit must be given her and. her mother for the maimer in which the party was carried out. Both the drawing-room and the dining-room were decorated With streamers and balloons and were iu keeping with the occasion. The evening was spent in games and singing, tho latter feature being very popular. A special item by Mr Tom Thornbui^row was well received. He gave a display of conjuring tricks, and his manipulations brought loud applause from the audience. In the supper-room, the crowd wsto ( surprised to see three birthday cakes on the table, each being adorned with 21 candles. However, this was explained 1 when it was announced that two of the members present, Miss "V. Batt and Mr W. McCarthy, were also eelebrating their 21st . birthdays. Miss Hayward '« cake waa made by her mother, while the two remaining cakes were made by Mrs Geake. After supper, Mr W. McCarthy, on behalf of the members present, presented Miss Hayward with a gold wristlet watch. Miss Hayward suitably replied. Among those present were: Mrs Gealce, Misses E. Geake, K. Hayward, Y. Batt, J. Batt, M. Waterhouse, -H. King, M. Johnfeon, E. Roil, R. Allan, A. Anderson, P. Calnan, A. Gregory, E. Gregory, H. Bligh and, M. Lomas; Messrs B. Black, S. Nutter, L. Faulding, P. Reid, V. Calnan, R. McCarthy, W. McCarthy, L. McCormick,. T. Banks, J. Ross, A. Ross, T. Thornburrow and O. Jonson.
