Waipawa Engineer's Report

WAIPAWA, Last Night. Following is the report presented at the monthly meeting of the Waipawa County Council "by the engineer, Mr V. E. Douglas: — Waipawa riding: Two chains of road in Tikokino township, which were formed up last month, have been metalled. The Te Onepu road will require re-met-alling shortly, the approximate cost being £100. About three-quarters of a mile of Butler's road between the Wai-pawaj-Tikokino highway and Butler's Bridge requires a new foundation. The cost would be approximately £80. Ongaongia riding; Rock and metal were spread on the Wakarara road between Gardner and Ceoman's mill, and the Wakarara Schopl, and on Glenny's road. Both these roads have been completed except for a few yaids to finish, and the Leyland unit is now working in the North Block road. Metalling of the hill road down to Hull's slab, and . the metalling of McLeod's road, is necessaryt and will be carried out when a lorx-y is available. The clerk and mysolf met tho Fletcher Estate trustees as instructed. Grading has been done on Mill road (Ongaonga), Pettit's Valley road,. Buchana's road and Bibby's road. The latter road was formed up on the flats ready for metalling later. Clinton . riding : Further metal was spread on the Ashcott-Waipukurau road and considerable patching was carried out as required particularly round the new bridgje approaches at O'Callaghan's and on Black's road between the junction with the Takapau-Clinton and Wilson's Cutting .roads. This latter piece of road requires thorough metalling and should be done when the. hill section of Black's road,. already authorised, .is attended to. Roads in this riding generally, excepting those that have been mulch surfaced} are showing the . effects of the recent wet weather. It is hoped to have the LeyJand lorry in this riding in about a fortnight, when work already authorised will be carried out and any further necessary work dealt with. The horse gjrader- has commenced work in the riding on the Tukituki-Makaretu road. During the month considerable work in cleaning water-tables, clearing blocked cqlverts, improved road surface and corners was carried out on Milne's road. Takapau riding: Metalling was done on Paulsen's road, Nancy street, and Otawhao Dairy Factory road. The first two cf these are now com.pleted and the sOther well under way. Main Bridges. O'Callaghan's bridge — The approaches to this bridge have now been completed and the bridgje is open to traffic. Fletcher's Crossing bridge. — This bridge was inspected again with the District Engineer and the Inspecting Engineer Public Works Department. McLeod's Bridge: — This bridge has been completed aud the approaches filled in, the road is now again open to traffic. Cattle stops are being ereeied. Application has been inade for the declaration of thp Ongaonga- Waipukurau road as a main highway. Main Highway^. Napier-Palmerston North Highway — The section near Pukehou is breaking up badly, and is diflicult to inaintaiu in reasonable order. A delay in the delivering of emulsion has prevented any sealing of patches being carried out, but this has now arrived and the work is in hand. A total of 24 new hardwood planks were installed in the Waipawa traffic bridge, and this work is» now being proceeded with further. lt is iutended to dispense with the tliree1 inch covering of bituminous material and to seal direct on the decking. Fernliill-Takapau Main Highway : — The approaches to the crossing over the Forest Gate water race was flafctened, the work not yet being completed. Approval to the . proposals for reconstruction of one mile through Tikokino has now been received, and tenders arc called for the work at this meeting!
