Entertaintd by President And Wile ' ENJOYABLE EVENING SPENT The members of the Hastings branch of the South African War Veterans' Association were entertained on Saturday evening by theiT president and his wife, Mr and Mrs H. W. C. Baird, at their rosidence, York street, Those who attended were Messrs. A. Ii. ISimpson, J. P. Foddy, L. W. Coinpton, T. 0. Beeehey, H. Bmale, W, J, Browiij H, E. (Jonnop, 1). Uondon, 1\ Lourie, B. Catherall, A. Horward, T. B. Bax, E. W. Murton, J. E. Cavanagh^ H. O. Tully, J. Hachett, McCulloeh, A. T. Welhvood, P. Sehinneck, E; Cornford W. M. Millar and L. J. Hammond (secretary). Apologies for absehce were received from Messrs. J. Craigj Brennigau, Borrie, Porter, Kofaertsoc, K. Johnston, Probert, Stringer and 0. Golding. Oh assembling, those present stood to attention for eome moments as an expression of respeet to the memory of tbeir two late comrades, Messrs. x. lugvaon and Ceeil Duffi. Yery little business was .done, as the meeting was principally of a sO'Ciai nature. The annual report of the Dominion exeeutive was xead and informally diseussed, and aceounts wero passed for payment, including a further donation of £2 2/* to a eomrade who. is rather seriously ill, It was deeided, on the president 's motion, to wri,te to the authonity eoncerned asking what progress has been niade with the plan for the xeconstruction of the South African War Meiuorial on the Marino Para-ie, Napier. A letter was received from the Mayor of Hastings thanking the association for its asaistance cn the Coronatioil procession. Messiis. L. * J. Hammond and W. M. Miller were appointed to represent the branch at the Dominion conference of the South African Veterans7 Association, which will be held in Wellington on the 28th inst., and were gi.ven power to deal wiitli the remits as xnight be found desirable. > During the evening musical items and lecitations were given by Messrs. Bax, Eodd'y, P. Scrinneek and others, and old-time songs were sung in chorus and old stories re-told. Gn the motion of Mr. Connop a warm vote of thanks was passed to the host and hostess, Mr. and Mrs., Baird, for the most enjoyable evening, and "For They Are Jolly Good Fellows ' was sung with enthusiasm, followed by ' ' Auld Lang Syne" and the National Afithem, which terminated proceedings. Mr. W. Lord offlciated at the piano very efficiently, atid largely contributed to the pleasure of the evening.
