Unfortunate Accident. An elderly lady, . one . of : Wairoa' s pioneers, Mrs L. Deightpn, sister o£ Mr T. Lambert, met with an unfortunate accident late on Sunday afternoon. Sli© was engaged feeding a neighbour's poliltry when she fell. There was no-one on the premises, but she dragged herself out of the yard and on to the road. Eventually help came ia the shape of a St. John Ambulance nian and a stretcher, and the patient was taken to hospitgl with a fractured thighbouB uaiicLren's qarden Party. On Saturday afternoon a most successful children 's garden party was keld in the beautiful grounds of Mr and Mrs J. Buchanan Js home, Otane. A large number of children .spent a very "happy afternoon, playing games, and joining in competitio'ns of various kinds. The proceeds are - to go .towards the local candidate for the Queen Carnival. The Wairoa Carnival Cominittee has now a balance to .credit .of £100, the. gain for the year being £74. odd^ and the stateinent given to the Power Board ' skowed that on the Coronation function there was a sinall • surplusi Already arrangements are being . undertaken m coiuiection with the 1938 carnival, mcluding the provision of miniature riflea for a shooting gallery. Bazaar Arrangements. • • On Friday evening a joint meeting, of members from the Otane Women '3 lnstitute and. the Carnival committee was held in the kai], when plans were discussed for a bazaar, the lnstitute to receive a certain sum .and the balanco to be ,used for the local candidate ;in the Queen Carnival. It was decided to hoid stallg 'i'or cakes, sweets, produce, f aney work, etc., and to run 'various siiill compptitions. .'Ihe chief attractioh is to be a tug of war, several teams already bemg keen to compete. As cxcellent prize muney is be iug oil'ered, it is hoped that severab more entries- will be received from other districts. The bazaar will open at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, August . 4, and again at 7 o'clock in the evening, when everyone will be .assured of a jolly night 's fun. No charge is being made for admission and a supper of sandwiches artd cakes or savejoys and potatoes will be obtainable at any time at a charge of sixpence,
