MURI WAI JERSEYS SOLD
Wide Interest in Takapau Pedigree Dispersal HERD IN GOOD CONDITION Considerable interest was taken , in the dispersal sale at Takapau of Mr Frank A. Thompson's well-known Muri Wai pedigree Jerseys. There was sl large attendance, and the whole of the milking herd was disposed of to .Hawke's Bay buyers. The sale was oondueted by the Hawke's Bay Parmers' Co-operative Association, Ltd., and refleoted the demand for quality dairy cows ehowing breediug. Mr Thompson founded the herd 15 years ago on som© of the best Jer" sey blood available. This inoluded blood from the famous K.C.B. bull imported from th'o Jersey Island and the Clementine etrain imported from Victoria. One of the foundation cows Was the well-known Wild itose III., of the Springfield herd, Twyford, Hastings. Later, the bull Alloa's Renown was introduced, line-brepding having been carried out from him with great suocess. The herd showed evidence of having been built up on good lines ; they were good typical dairy types, deepbodied, quiet, and easily handled. Tested by the Southern Hawke's Bay Herd-Testing Association, mlany of the cows had high-producing records. Under an official test over last season, whieh was unusually drjy, jthe herd) averaged 3251bs. of butterfat for 283 days at an average test of 5.1. Given favourable conditions on first-class dairying lUnd, the Muri Wai Jerseys would rank high among the producing records. The top price was 21 guineas for fifth calver, which produced 4021bs. of fat in 244 days, the purchaser being Mr H. Phillips, the well-known Jersey breeder, of Raumati, Dannevirke. The herd came forward in very good condition, and were practicaUy all July and August calvers. The 12 two-year-olds, all of which were purehased by Mr E. W. P. Colee, of. Ongaonga, were an a-ttractive Une of young stock. The only bull ofiered was Muri Wai Reality, a yiisiug three-year-old Iby, Muri Wai Producer, and he was purehased at I5gnss by Mr R. K. Donald, of Ascot. In addition, Mr Thompson offered his team of three draught mares, which were in splendid condition. First-class all-round farm horses, they sold at up to £57.
