JAPAN WANTS IRON
Agreement Reported with Australia (Received 12, 11.0 a.m.) DARWIN, July 12. Efforts are still being pursued by the JapaneBe to obtain heavy supplies of iron ore from Australia. The minimum quantity required yearly is estu mated at 3,000,000 tons. An agreement is repoxted to have been coneluded by the Japanese representative, Mr N, Umeda, with powerful steel interests in Australia for supplies from north-eastern Australia deposits which will be worked with AustraliaD capital Mr Umeda, who is en route to Sydney to sign the agreement says: "1 cannot underst-and the suspicion. ..osociated with Japanese eiforts to obtain iron ore as it is purely a matter of trade Hke wool or wheab. There is no thougbt of peaceful penetration of Australia." He added tlxat Japan was also prepared to taka cattle which could *be carried in the same sliips as the iron ore.
