Grand National Steeples Won By Last End rider's unique feat

MELBOURNE, July 10A comparative outsider, . the Soath Australian gelding Last End, won tho Grand National Steeplechase to-dav in brilliant faskion after allowing Seymour to make the pace for three-fourths of the distance. Santa Casa, who linishcd fourth, never threatened danger and Cape LRock, who was greatly fancied, rau only moderately. Last End's rider, F. Dummott, also won tho Grand National Hurdles on Triteleia, which is an- unique feat in the annals of the nationals. The New Zealandor, Royal Order, although last away in the Two-Yeur- I Old Mile Handicap, won otyllshl^. Chief Tesults are: — DOUTTA GALLA HURDLE RACE, of £500; 23 miles. DAKWOOD, 10.5 (Douglas) 1 King Siris, 9.4 (Jennings) 2 Jack Thrice, 9.5 (Fulluston) .... 3 Five started. Length; seven lengths. Time, 4.13$. TWO-YEAR-OLD MILE, of £500; 1 mile. ROYAL ORDER, 8.1 (Jenkins) .. 1 Ortelle's Star, 7.11 (Preston) .... 2 Gladness, T.5 (Cooper) 3 Twelve started. One and a-quarter lengths; two and a-half lengths. Time, 3.413. GRAND NATIONAL STEEPLECHASE of £2500; about 3 miles and 1 furlong. LAST END, 10.2 (Dummett) .... 1 Seymour, 11.3 (Fullarton) 2 Montargis, 9.9 (McMahon) ...... 3 All started, The early leaders were Rehabeam, Lady Madge, Bermuda, Seymour, Last End and Santa Casa. The field diminished passing the mile, where, fn quick succession, Lady Madge, Bermuda and Stobus fell and Rehabeam jmd MOnkey Tricks lost their riders. Seymour then went to the front, closely attended by Last End and the pair racccl together over a mile with Montargis, Santa Cusa, Tongalla, Wakeriffo and Chpo Lilock somo lengths in tho rear, Last End took the lead at the six' furlongs aud finished resolutely despite Seymour 's strong challengj and won by four lengths, with Montargis eight lengths away third. Santa Casa was fourth, then Tongalla, Wakeriffe, Cape Lilock and Ckaracter. Time, 6.8$, Dummett had a rough ride, Last Eud striking four fences, at the last of which he nearly fell, Dummett loSing a stirrup but he icgained it, after a despcrate effort, in the last few yards. Riddle was unplaeed in tho July Handicap, which ivas won by Alinura. FOOTSCRAY STEEPLES. JEHU, 9.12 (Godfrey) . . ' 1 Tezpur, 11.6 (Maher) 2 Lady's Maid, 9.10 (Snyders) .... 3 Fourteen started. Twenty lengths; a head, Time, 4.35. Only eignt finished.
