LEEDS, July 10. \ New Zealand experienced a cheerless; day in the field with cold weather and' an unhelpful wicket in the match against Yorkshire which, although weakened by the absence of Sutclifi'o and Leyland, was reinforced by tho inclusion of the university stars, Yardley and Gibb. Gibb and Hutton gave the county a good start of a 117 for the first wickei, Rain interrupted play for an hour in the morning and again for half an hour in the afternoon. The New Zealand bowling was not as st-eady as usual, excepting for Cowie, and even Dunning sent down an occasional long-hop. Hutton and Mitchell rased the score to 257, and Hutton, who showed an admirable blend of defence and attack. made hardly a mistake except when at 85 he appeared caught by Tindill oll Dunning. After Vivian had proved unsuccessful, Donnelly ghouldered the glowbowling and he took two wickets with consecqtive b&Us. Yorkshire -'s score quickJy changed from one for 257 to four for 267, and Weir, fielding in the legion of square leg, accepted a third catch oflE the slow left-hander at 285. Donnelly, who was bowling round the wicket, turned the ball hack and all catches came through mis-hit balls whi'ch the batsmen tried to ' force. The New Zealaud attack was d^fied by Turner and Smailes just when another succes3 would have been serious for Yorkshire. I Seven thousand five hundred demonetrative and knowledgeable county folk frequently applauded the flslding, especially Kqrr's when he hefe an exceilent catch at long-on. Roberts, who wa3 suffering from a sore shoulder, Garson, Gallichan, Hadlee and Lowry were " omitted from the New Zealand team. ! Suteliffe, suffering from an injured leg, and Leyland, from a fractured finger, were not playing and the Yorkshire team was: Hutton, Gibb, Mitchell, Yardley, Turner, Sellars, Smailes, Ver- . ity, "Wood, Robinson and Bowes.
