"If Britain were to give Herr Hitler a free .hand in Uentral and Eastern Europe, it might well be that he would be cordial to her for a long time and postpone those paris of his ambitions which she might find offensive. But in such an event Britain would do well not to cxpect any Central or Eastern European support if subsequently Herr Hitler, having satisfied his other ambitions, should start to satisfy thOse which rexnained and which affected her, ' ' writes Mr Frank Darvall iu his hook, "The Price of European Peace." fShe would do well, too, to remember that, not having the prospect of Central or Eastern European support, and being exposed to the attack of a victorious Germany, she would be dangerously vulnerable. • . "Is it not possible — though as things are improbable — that Eastern Enrope will itself play the same game more successfully, making a deal with Der Fuhrer and H Duce' at the expense of Britain? Is it not merely possible, but even probable, that Russia, or the Little Entente, or Franee, if faced with the prospect of Britain selling them out to Germany, will be tempted, if they can, to beat Britain to the bargain —and sell her out to one or other, or both, of the great "Have Nots,*' Which could find suoh satisfactory pickings from the corpse of the British Empiro?" Mr Darvall is of opinion that Great Britain must by sacrifice and reasonable eoneession help to satisfy Germany, but this must not be at the expense of the other European Powers? to wliom shc must be 'loyal.
