Victory for South in Spectaeular Game 30 POINTS TO 21

(By Telegraph-

;; - WELLINGTON, Laat Night. Played. at a fast pace throughout, the annual North v. South Rugby match at Wellington yesterday, played before 27,000 people, proved to be one of the most spec- ■ tacular of encounters for yeaxs and. victory went to the South. in the last 10 minutes of the game and they won by 30 points to 21. .The weather was beautifully fine and the ground was fast. The- South forwards were able jto keep control in the loose by viftue pf their greater pace and they played with greater dash and "combination, ' • The solid play of Trevathan, the brilliance on attack of Hooper, the experience . of Mitcheli and fhe speed of Cobden, made the South back line superior. • ■ 'The North backs had plenty of opportunities, but penotration was largely lacking except for some quick bursts by Solomon. The scrums were more deeisive in the second spell and this ied Lto brighter back play and the attacking movements mcreased in brilliance as the game advanced, the last quarter, especially, being packed with thrills. In the hooking duel between Lambourne and Orman, tne former was slightly superior. First blood went to the South' after • II minutes' play when Trevathan kicked a penalty goal from 10 yards in. The North equalised five minutes after when Pollock kicked a penalty from a handy position. Hooper then opened a brilliant display of cutting in when he clapped on the pace from a scrum and sent in a clever screw kick which liankin gathered in jto score under the posts. Trevathan missed. A minute later there was a highlight when Mitcheli fielded a short kick and sped down the sideline, brushing asido tackles and bumping Pollock ofE to cross eight yards in. . Tyevathan icicked a fine goal. •McKenzie next threw a long pass to Sullivan, whose attempted pot failed to * rise. Hooper again cut in but lost the ball. Pearce colleeted it and raccd away to transfer to Barton, the centre handing on to Solomon, who went over 15 yards from the corner. Pollock cou.verted. The North forwards now were putting more energy into their work. However, Trevathan put South further ahead with a penalty goal when Clothier came round the scrum too quickly. Pollock frequently .tried to dodge the obcoming attackers and was usually caught. Taylor, on the othor • hand, : .geldonv delayed his movements long enough to be left with the ball. Orma,n and Quaid Were breaking quickly from the scrums and the South forwards were dangerous. Pollock brought ; North within three points of South 's ; score with another penalty goal. Right on half-time, when the ball came out to Barton from a ruck, Sulbvan got possession, raced down the line and kicked ahead of Taylor, gatnered in the bounee. and scored a most spectaeular try which Pollock converted magnificently. North led 16—14 at .the interval. '. The Second Spell. On xesuming Solomon left Hooper standing with a cut-in, but Morrison caught Barton from behind when the movement looked most dangerous. North began to win the scrums and tho backs handled frequently, " Solomon always threatening to break away. Hooper then executed a brilliant cut through, passed to Milliken, who kicked ahead of Ward. Ning chased :t and South were nearly over. The effort was rewarded when Trevathan kicked an easy penalty. Ten ininutes later the North backs got away and Phillips beat Morrison, sent a low pass in to Solomon. It was , brilliantly gathered and Orossman galloped 25 yards to score under the posts. Pollock 's kick put North foujr points ahead. The next score came to South when Hooper forced his way through and handed to Rankin. Mitcheli was handy and he raced downfield, transferring to Morrison as Pollock tackled him. Trevathan was just short with his attempt to convert. With a point separating the teams the play became spectaeular and exciting. The South forwards attacked strongly, but North pushed them back. Morrison only just caught Phillips when the winger got away. Cobden picked up and tried to bulloek past Pollock with Quaid in support. The Soui>h forwards now took cliarge with Parkhill and Rankii. in the lead. Then Cobden brought the crowd to its feet when he kicked aheid after a North' back attaek had broken down, and beat Pollock and Barton to the line. Trevathan converted. Two minutes later, Hooper again fooled the defence. Mitcheli carried on and when he handed to Cobden and tbe winger was tackled only inches short of the line. Pearce relieved North with a fine break from a loose scrum. An attempt by Cro3sman to cut-in was frustrated when Hooper again jinked ma UIL} tix.utlgn uun C0U1.1 ..IIICUCU Ua handy to xeceive the pass. l'hillips turned his back on him and the South captaiu zig-zagged five or six times, scoring under tho posts. Trevathan converted. In the final minute Crossman gathered the ball in the loose and- after a fine run, sent Phillips away, Taylor just managing to catcli the winger in the corner. Of the two vanguards all South were in great fettle. Milliken toiled in tho tight and often broke loose, Hattersley f usually with him. Parkhill was a spleni did back-row forward. Kankin was a

big factor in the South victory by his speed and opportunism. Of the North forwards, Pearce ahd Jackson were outstanding. The otheTS did not show np in the loose but packed well. Mr. E. B. Berry, Hawke's Bay, r-«*r4eed.
