Cancellation of 40 Licences

CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. One of the first steps to be taken by the metropolitan licensing authority in Christchurch will be to reduce the number of taxis at present operating in the city by 40. Tliis will mean the cancellation of nearly a quarter of the licenses now operative. The deeisioh of tlie authority was announced by tlie chairman, Mr J. W. Beafiland, who said that tlie authority was aeting 011 ihe advice of tlie Commissioiier of Transport, Mr G. Laurcnson. Only by cancelJating 40 licenses could payment of a weekly wage of £4 10/- to d rivers be inade economically possible. In the meantime, no new licenses could be granted, nor , could transfers be approved.
