Lebfuh, to-day signed the new decrefes issued by Cabinet imposing a vigOTOUS programme of extra taxation to bring in £80,000,000 to balahce the Bttdget, including a 30 per cent. incfease in lettef postage and telephone chafges, and a 20 per cent. ancreaee on tdbacco and income tax, the latter to be retrospeetive to 1936. The customs, estate ahd stamp dtitifes are increased and also gas^ oil ahd petrol taxes. There will also bfe higher railway farea. Immediately aftferwards, the Preinier; M. Camille Chautemps, broadcast an appeal to the country fdr a unlted feffort to rid FranCe of her financial instability. "The effort yoti are callfed on to make is a big one, but ,it is tinavdidable; We are Sure the nation will understand this is its one way to salvation."
