AUCKLAND, Last Night. Non-committal xeplies to questioiis about the prospect of New Zealaua effecting more favourable trade agreements ^with United States in the near future, were given by Mr, Maxwell MacMaster, president of the American Importers' and Exporters' Association, New York, who arrived by the Mariposa. Although business men in the largcr American eities wero sympatlxetic, he said, the majority of farmers and shopkeepers in small towns were opposed to any re'axing of the present tariffs. Mi*. MaeMaster, whose association is closely in touch with various State departments in Anxerica, has gone on to Australia in the capacity of unofficial ambassador who will seek to further friendly trade relationships between that country and his own. In a few weeks he will visit New Zealand with a similar purppse in view. He said that although American businessmen generally held both countries in high re j gard, he suggested there were difficu! ; ties in the 'way of loworing tariffs that , would benefit them.
