JACK SHEAVES
HIS RETIREMENT MADE AUSTRALIAN CROSS-COUNTRY CHAMPION
HIS FAIRNESS IN RUNNING.
Jack Sheaves, Australian crosscountry champion, and New South Wales one and three miles track champion runner, has retired. After 12 years of first rate athletics he has decided to put away his shoes. One of the most popular runners that ever put a spike in a running track, Sheaves was noted for his unqualified fairness in running, and his remarkable stamina. Though 29 years of age last Deedmber, Sheaves won the New South Wales State one and three miles championship. His inches win over Lionel Goff, of Botany, in the mile, was a race that will remain long in memory. On the books of the A.A.A. of New South Wales Sheaves' records are: Two miles: 9min. 32.4sec. (1931). 400Q metres: 12min. 12sec. (1931). 5000 metres: 15min. 23.4sec. (1931). When he ben.t A. J. Hillhouse and J. W. Begg, of Victoria, in the first Test match 'between New South Wales and Victoria in 1932 at Sydney Cricket Ground, Sheaves won a marvellous race in 4min. 22sec.— the fastest time ever put up by a New South Welshman over a mile. This is not, however, the New South Wales States re-
cord, for A. J. Hillhouse (Victoria) clocked 4min. 21.4sec. 11 months previously. Sheaves will go down in athletic history as unlucky not to have represented Australia at the Olympic or Empire Games. He was deflnitely of a better standard in his events than some who gained their Australian jersey. One had hoped that Jack would have been able to compete at the Empire Games, where even still he could distinguish the name of Australia. But it is not to be. Sheaves goes out of athletics leaving behind a name for racing class and good sportsmanship that is a model for those who will fill his place. The following are some of the championships won by Sheaves: Australian cross-country championship (1935), Australian three-miles track championship (1936), New South Wales one mile championship (1932-3-4-7), New South Wales three miles .championship (1931-2-3-4-7), New j South Wales 40 miles champion, shin i.(193J.-2'3-5), .v ,
