Mr. Massey's Rise to Power The Cabinet of the late Rt. Hou. W. F. Massey was sworn in 25 yeara ago to-day. Mr Massey was Prtwc Miuister of New Zealaud from 1912 until his death in 1925 — a four-yeur interregnum being during tho administration of the National Government. during tho Great War. Mr Massey canie to New Zealand in the ship City of Auckland in 1870, Eia first attempfc to enter Parliament was iu 1893, wheu he was narrowly de feated- The following year he won n by.eleetiou for the Waitemata scat. In 1903 Mr Massey was appointed Leadev of the Opposition, which was steadily gaindug in strength. Sir Joseph Ward received a doubtful mandate from the country iu 1911 and, following his defeat, Sir Thomas Mae kenzie fornjed a Ministry. He wns defeated ou a no-confidenee motion ou luly 5, 1912, by 41 votes to 33, and ou .Tuly 10 Mr Massey's Cabinet was sworn in. The National Government was formed in 1915, the Liberals co-operating heartily with Reform. In 1919 this association terminated, and Reform again gained a victory at the general eleetion in December, 1919, Mr Massey retaining office until his "death on May 14, 1925.
