NAPIER MARINE DRIVE
Double Roadway (or tbe Foreshore
WORK TO COMMENCE A small section of the task of constructing an additional roadway on the seaward side of the row of Norfolk Pines on the Marino Parade, Napior, is to be under taken shortly by the Napier Borough Council. When the double roadway is completed from the Sound Shell to the borough boundary, traffic will be divided by the trees into inward and outward-bound vehicles. To assist in the scheme, 85 per cent. of the labour costs have been off-ered the council by Mr Walter Bromley, liaison offieer to the Department of Labour, following his recent discussions with local bodies in Napier. It is estimated that the work, Including the demolition of the Marino wall and the extension of the filling on the beach outward for 30 yards, will provide employraent for 30 men for four months. The portion of the embankment outside the extra roadway will be sunk to a depth of over four feet for approximately a quarter of a mile to provide for playing areas, and a heavy erabankoient of shingle and rocks will protect the whole from the heavy seas. At a future date it is intended that the double roadway shall extend to tho borough boundary, but at present a portion of the work oniy, for the 30 yaTds between the Sound* Shell and Albion street will be completed. The scheme will not call for the removal of the Sound Shell or colonnade, but a corner of the latter will be sloped slightly in order to make the entrance for the new roadway.
