-Press Association . )

Al' ,ations to Tournament Rules THE ANNUAL MEETING

(By Telegraph-

DUNEDIN, Last Night. ®atisfaction at the steady growth of the game of bowls in the Dominion was expressed by Mr. S. M. Stone, in moving the adoption of the annual Teport and balance-sheet at. the annual meeting of the N.Z. Bowling Association which was held to-day. Mr. Stone said there had been an increase of 602 bowiers over the numbers for the previous year and a number of ncw clubs had been formed. " In the absence of -the immediate past president (Hon. W. Perry), Mr. S. M. Stone "(Wellington) occupied tho chair until the prcsident-clcct, Mr. W. Connor (Dunedin) was installed in his oflice. Others present were the newly-clected vice-president, Mr. F, A, Hocking (Auckland), the treasurer, Mr. H. Rowley (Dunedin), and the following councillors, Messrs G. L. Cladding and A. Whitten (Auckland), P. H. Rowe (South Auckland), E. T. Petty (Taranaki), H. Mayo (Hawke's Bay), S. M. Stone and W. Gilbert (Wellington), L. B. Evans and H. B. Oakey (Christchurch), T. Currie (South Canterbury), D. H. Thomson (North Otago), G. A. Nelson and R. Hanning (Dunedin), and S. C. K. Sinith (Sonthland). In welcoming the delegates, the Mayor (Rev. A. E. Cox) said that he had been a bowler for 15 years and when he first came to Dunedin he played more bowls than he had ever done anywhere else which was due to the f avourable climatie conditions. The president of the Dunedin Bowling jCentre (Mr. J. H. Hinton) said that on •behalf of nearly 20,000 bowlers in the iDunedin Centre it was his great pleas.ure to accord to them, their "bowling ;parliament, ' ! a cordial welcome to Dunedin. Their game of bowls was a wonderful game and all classes united in enjoying the game and the good fellow-, ship and harmony asscciated with it. Returning thanks for the welcome,. jMr. Stone apologised for the absence of ' jthe Dominion president (Hon. W. iPerry) who was prevented by pressuTe; jof business from being present. "It is^ Ipleasing to note that the membership of i jbowling clubs is increasing," said Mr.; [Stone, in moving the adoption of the jannual report and balance-sheet. "Year; j Dy year more bowlers are being broughtj jinto the game and the increase of 602' -over the previous year is something to ibe pleased about. The finanees of the association ue healthy." The year commenced with a credit balance of !£395 I6s 2d and ended with a balance of £528 12s. They had a very good entry for the Dominion tournament and the entry fees showed an inerease of £94. It was not the object of the association to go on building up a large fund and he did not want to convey the impression that that was the major object. The motion was seconded by Mr. T. Currie (South Canterbury). Mr. G. A. Nelson (Dunedin) asked if any of .the funds were tied up and if all the reserves were shown on the bal-ance-sheet. The chairman said that there were no ■reserves in any shape or form. The report and balance-sheet wero adopted. Mr. Stone invited Mr. W. Connor to ,take the chair and congratulated him on |his election to the important position of i president of the N.Z. Bowling Association,- Mr. Stone presenting Mr. Connor with his badge of office. Mr. Connor returned thanks for his Welcome and election and then presented councillors' badges to Messrs E. T. Pptty (Taranaki) and W. Gilbert (Wellington). It was deeided to forward messages of appreciation to Messrs H. G. Mayer and J. Kershaw (Wellington) and G. S. Gordon (Wanganui). Mr. Douglas Hanning was appointed secretary of the association and Mr. C. Russell-Smith auditor. It was deeided jthat the exeeutive should consist of the [president (Mr. W. Connor), the treas•urer (Mr. H. Rowley), and the Dunedin jmembers of the council (Messrs G. A. : Nelson and R. Hanning). It was resolved that the tournament jcommittee should consist of the local 'councillors together with those members of the Dunedin Centre they dcsired to co-opt. It. was deeided that the Dominion championship tournament at Dunedin begin on Monday, January 10, and the order of play was deeided upon as follows: Singles, pairs and rinks, with rinks having preference in pos^-section play. The recommendation of the exeeutive "that .tha singles competition at the , annual association tournament be played under the automatic two-life system throughout" created some discussion, the motion being carried by 9 votes to 6. "That the aection play of tho pairs competition be conflned to one day's play, four games only to be played," was recommended by the exeeutive and carried and a further recommendation from the exeeutive was carried that any player winning four or three games or tieing for seetions with a lesser number should take part in the post-sec-fcional play on the sudden death system, Mr. Smith (Southland) stated that the rules required members of pairs combinations to be members of the same club. The apparent aim of the provision was to avoid "pot-hunting," but it inflicted hardships. The chairman said that notice of motion would be required to deal with tho matter and Mr. Smith gave notice of motion as follows: "That discretionary power be given to the tournament 'exeeutive to accept entries for pairs from players who are not menibers ] of the same club."

A motion was moved by Mr. HoskTng and seconded by Mr. Thomson that rinks play should be conducted as was tihe case last year. This was that the rink teams should be divided iilto sec-tions and that at the conclusion of the seetion games post-section play should follow. Where eight games constituted seetion play the teams to qualify for post-section play should be: (a) Any team which won six or more games in its seetion, (b) any team which fhough it won less than six games was the winner of its seetion, (c) any team which though it won less than six games tied as one of the winners of its seetion. Unless clause (b) or (c) applied any team which had been more than twice defeated in seetion play s'hould not qualify for post-section. If seetion play consisted of nine games j for the seetion then the qualification j clauses (a), (b) and (c) giv6n above i would ipso facto be increased to seven 1 wins. Post-section play would be on the automatic two-life principle. Winners ! would play winners and losers play • losers, buf the tournament committee ! would have power to play winner against a loser if it considered such I course advisable. A team losing two i games would not continuo to play. Three games per day of 21 heads each | (or three hours) would be played. | Mr. Smith moved an amendment that I post-section play in the rinks be on the | One-life system, this being seconded by Mr. Currie. ■ - The amendment was d-efeated and the motion carried. The time limits for the annual tournament games were fixed the same as last year, singles 21 heads or 1} hours, pairs 21* heads or 2J hours, rinks two games each day of 25 heads. The entertainment expenses incurred during the annual tournament of the association were the subject of a remit from the Christchurch Centre which recommended that the expenses be a direct chatge on the tournament funds of the association. The view was expressed by Mr. H. B. Oakey (Christchurch) that the expdnses should be curtailed though not so fai as the wives of participants in tournaments were concerned. The remi.t was adopted unanimously.
