The Gnited States Government has jUf.t begun a tusk which rnust be oue of the straugest an Aduiinisiiation has ever undertuken. lt is spending E/5 UUU in tryitig to put out a fire which has been buruing for tnore than half a century. Already the fire has deslroyeu £10,000,000 worth of coal. Unless U is ■put out it will go on burinng iiidefinite ly and eventualiy destroy £200,00u,000 worth. in L8S4 there was a bitter coal strike ui the Hosking Valley, Ohio. The atrikers were in an ugly mood, and they set fire to one of the mines. That fire has been burning ever since, and all eff-orts to extinguish it have failed. Now and thou the fiery mass beneath sbows itself in geysers of steam, rushes of gas and smoke, and even flames (listurb the surface oo occasion.
