Major Carruth Says Public Preferred Khaki "INSULT TO N.Z.E.F."
(By TelegrapL
WHANGAREI, This Day. "To deseribe the tiniforms of the New Zealand Coronation Contingent asilliitting and shabby is absurd," said Major Carruth, Whangarei, who commanded the contingent on the return trip. "British line regiments wore blue for the first time, and the general public and men preferred khaki, which all the Dominion and colonial troops wore. The uniforms were fitted by tailors, and alterations were made to secure a good fit." He had heard no suggestion in England that the contingent did not look smart. The English people remembered the New Zealanders in the war years, when they always wore khaki, and it was an insult to the N.Z.E.F. to say that the uniforms were shabby. The men were a fine body and a- credit to the Dominion. They realised what they liad to live up to, and appreciated all that had been done for them.
