Britain to Reduce Import Ditties

Refcrringvin the House of Commons to the shortage of Home-produced steel, the President of the Board of Trade, Mr Oliver Stanley, said htat the Im. port Duties Advisory Committee in 1935 was informed of the possibility of special steps being necessary to meet the inereased demand for steel. Arnangements were then made with the Continental caTtel for imports in ex. cess of those agreed to. Since then Home production had doveloped greatly and further purchases have bcon made abroad. The sudden increase in world demand in the autumn of 1936, however, seriously affeeted the flow of imports and various adjust. ments of import dudties have been marlfl to maintain the inereased rate of importation. Mr Stanley said that two orderf have been issued whereby the duties or many categories of imported iron and steel would be substantially reduced from to-morrow.
