Hastings Defeated in Forward Game EVEN ENCOUNTER In their first win of the season Havelock; North gave of their best to defeat Hastings on the Domain ground, Havelock North, by 11 points to eight. The play lackcd briiliancy, as the condition of the grounds called for a hard forward game, and in this department the Villagers gained a slight supremacy over the Hastings pack. The teams Were: — Hastings. — Dycr, llobertson, Nelson, Horton, Gillics, Cooke, McVayt Howell, Tate, ^Vilson, McDonald, Pearsoa, Croft, "Wright, Muir. Havelock.— Bligh, R. Joll, F. Gloyn, Taylor, R. Gloyn, C. Joll, Davis> Butcher, McKenzie, Russell, Small, Ross, Fergusson, A. Joll, Heffernan. • The ehrly part of the game saw Hastings at bay, making fruitless attempts to clear from a determined Blne pack who were vainly frying to open up the play. The Villagers drew first biood when from a hard ruck Russell gained possession, and eombining with Davis, sent McKenzie over. Binall 's kick failed. Hastings promptly retaliatcd with'' a bright dash by Muir, and the Villagers had a few anxious moments until relieved by Danis, play being cairicd back in Hastings territory. Twenty minutes of up-aud-down play followed this move, in wlnich Havelock had a slight territorial advantage, terminating in the Blue captaiu taking tho ball to sct Gloyu und Davis in motion, the latter grounding the ball. C. Joll capped this cffort with the kick. At this stage of the game Hastings made a strong rally to open their seoring. Tho forwards niadc repeated attacks, but the Havelock defenee pvoved sourid and the spell ended witn the Villagers leading eight to nil. rewarded when McDonald, making a short solo rnn, effected a touch-down, The points were added by Nelson 'c kick. With the score thus levelled aud the spell well advanced both sides were expectant, and some very strenuoua football was being staged when a freeldck was awarded againat Havelock, making the figures eight all. Nevfcrtheless the Blues rallied to one further effort and were rewarded when R. Joll battled his way acrose, to add the winming points, the final score readmg 11 to eight.
