'PLANE DOWN WEST OF HOWLAND ISLAND

(Received 5, 11.30 a.m.) LOS ANGELES, July 4. Naval officials announce that they have conflrmed reeeption by four amateur radio operators of messages from Mrs Putnam on Saturday morniug. All four received identical messages giving the position longitude 179, latitude 1.6. This position would plaee the fliers at about 120 miles due west of Howland Island and just north of the equator. A shortwave radio pieked up au S.O.S. in which a woman's voico repeated Mns Pntnam's call letters. The voice and the frequoncy were identical with those of yesterday's messages.
