THE NEW CHAMPION

J. Bonald Budge, who was born in 1P16 and i9 abQUt seven years younger than von Cramm (the Geman will be 2'S on July 7), has egtablished himself as the most formidahle young playeT in the world in the past two years. He gained his flrst win over Perry at the age of 18 in one of the Paciiic Coast tournaments where the Englishman used to compete between his majoT events in both hemispheres. This was the first time on which he reached the singles final at Wimbledon, but he has been in the final four for the last tbree seasons. In 1935 he beat Austin and entered the semi-final, where von Oramm won 4 — 6, 6 — 4, 6 — 3, 6 — 2, but turned the tables on von Cramm in the inter-zone final of the Davis Cup, winning 0 — 6, 9 7, 8 — 6, 6 — 3, and also beat Henkel in four sets. Last season Budge beat Quist in entering the Wimbledone semi-final, but was defeated there by Perry 5 — 7, 6 — 4, 6 — 3, 6—4. In the Davis Cup mateh that year Budge beat both Quist and Crawford in the singles but lost to Crawford and Quist in the doubles, in which his partner was Gene Mako, after leading by two sets to love. This year Budge won all his Dayis Cup matches against the Australians, losing only one set. Van Cramm did not compete in the French championships this season, resting for the big engagements ahead. Budge, however, apparently has not been exerting • himself overmuch in his matches- in the United States and thus may also be fresh. He was seeded ahead of von Cramm by the Wimbledon (iommittee.
