- Koolman and "Bomba" Welk at Waipawa NAPIER MAN DISQUAUFIED I

WAIPAWA, This Day. In the Municipal Theatre, Waipawa, Jast evening, wrestling enthusiasts were treated to a bright and spectaculor display of wrestling in the first professional bout ever staged in the town. The main bout was between Anton Koolman, of Wellington, and "Bomba' ' Wells, of Napier, and the ligkt-heavyweight championship of. New Zealand was at stake The contest was of particular interest to the people of Waipawa, "Bomba" having been born in the town, and spent a great part of his life hene. There wai a large attendance of the public, all keenly interested in the appearance of the local boy, and the organising eommittee, and particularly the secretary, Mr R. W. Hooper, are to be comm ended on tbeir enterprise in arranging the match. The first fall came in the tbird round, when Wells, after holding Koolinan in a head scissors, was dumped by Koolman, who secured tbe fall with the "Koolman crab. j In the sixfch round Wells came out with a drop kick, floored Koolman, and foreed him from the ring, then secured a fall from a body press. The elimax came in the seventh round wben Wells, rushing from his corner severel^ jolted Koolman all roufid the ring. A warning.was issued by the referee, who considered he was punching, and shortly after he disqualified Wells and awarded the match to Koolman. = The decision was very unpopular with the 1 crowd who hooted the referee. At thii stage, Koolman,. who had seemed very groggy, created a diversion by endeavouring to take on all and sundry, including officials and the referee, and linally having to be stopped by the poliee. Interviewed after the match, Wells stated that he was dissatisfied with the award and was prepared to ineet Koolman again anywhere at any time. Mr A. Bain, relereed the main bout, and Mr A. Nicliollg (Waipawa)." tbe prcliminary bouts. Tbe announccr was Mr J. H. Nicholl, and Mr T. W. WiJls was timekeepcr. A number of bright preliniinary bouts were provided, the results being as follow:— 0. Brock (10.4) v. R. Howe, ended in a draw after a fine exbibition of all-in wrestling; Cyclone Lock (Napier) defeated S. Wright (Napier) by a lubmission fall secured in the second round j S. McGoll (10.5) defeated P. Head (10) by a fall from a headlock in the second round; the bout between Horrie Seott (Westshore) and Tiger Hartsliom (Napier) ended in a draw; W. Adama (11.2) v. !. McQuilken (11), Waipawa's Wilkenny Kats, staged a bright bout, also resulting in a draw.
