Quiet Markets in South
(By Telegrapb-
CHK1STCHUKCH, Last Nigkt. The grain and produce markets ha ic been very quiet this week and even potatoes which have been active for some weeks, have beguu to slackeh oli . with the departure of the South American boats. Three more ships are availuble, two this month and one in August, but a fair proportion of the cargoes for these is already in store. There appears to be practically no interest at ali ainong North lsiand buyers. In the Canterbury marliet there is some enquiry for reds, but whites, owing to , low quotations from Timaru, are weak. Potatoes are not offering from the country very freely mainly becanse the wct weather has held up digging. The wet weather has also held up the wheat sowings and though many. farmors held back increased supplies for seed, they have been unable to get it in. The July increment of a penny hjls gone on to milling wheat, but it is likely that farmers who have held till now will wait for the further two halfpenny increments in August and Septemb^r before selling. Imports of oats and chaff from Tasmania to the northern* markets have weakened quotations here, and there is no great amount of business in either. The small seeds market continues very quiet.
