Southland Has Week of Low Temperatures

INVERCARGILL, Last Night. Wliat is believed to be a record frost for Invercargill, 18 degrees, was registered this morning. Since last Saturday there has been hardly a cloud in the sky and each night has been cold, clear and frosty, followed by bright sunny days. It is as cold tonight as it Was last night and if a new record is established ifa the morning it would not cause any surprise. The ground in shaded parts is now as hafd as a rock. More water pipes were burst in more houses to-day than on any other day during the week. The deinand for plumbers is euormous but, according tot one mau, to-day marked oiily the begitifiing of the rush. A uuinber of pipes have not yet thawed and it is when they do that they begin to burst. The number of bouseholdera requiring' tho services of plumbers haB been so great that in many cases only temporary repairs have been done and the work will have to be sompleted latef. The severity of the frost was felt not only in homes. Garages reported a; ijusy time repairing burst radiators of curs, maiuly as tho rcsult of outfiow [ilpes being froai-n. The degrees of frost registored iu Invercargill during tho week have been as foliows:— -Saturday 12, iiunday 1C, Monday 12, Tucsday 10, Wednesday 5,fliureday 11, Priday 18.
