Raupunga Workers' Union. At the last meeting of the Raupnnga branch of the N.Z. Workers' Union, after the annual report was adopted, Mr ■ A. Te Aho was elected secretary to the Medical Association, vice Mr D. Reed, resigned. Bird-Seed Growing. In connection with the movement reported in various parts of the Dominion in favour of embarking in tho industry of growing canary seed and other birdsceds, your correspondent has been infonned by a Wairoa pioneer settler that he grew these seeds in Wairoa over 50 years ago. He secured what might be reckoned a heavy crop, but leaving ratlier late in reaping the birds gottheir own supply in advance. The same settler also grew some very fine peanuts in shingly soil which had been a Maori kumara ground, but- come to the conclusion that to make it an economic proposition the land and the labour would have to be very cheap. Wairoa Dairy Factory. The May pay-out of the Wairoa Cooperative Daiiy Factory totalled £2,544 16/2, on a baSis of 1/- per lb. for finest. The contract for 'the erection of tho new factory buildings in Mahia Aveuue , is progressing satisfactorily. All the foundation work has been completed, and the reinforced concrete walls are no wnearly up to the eaves. A good deal of the new machinery has come to hand, but so far none of it has been installed, this part of the work having been held over till the rooling has been carried out. The factoy stands on a .commanding position close by the railway slation, so soon to be in evidence. F®wer Births and Marriagos. lhere were fewer births and marriages, but more deaths, in the Waipukurau distriet during June. The vitai statistics l'or the month. are as follow, the figures for the ' corresponcling month of last ye'ar being shown in parentheses:-— Births 2 (7),- deaths 5 (3), marriages 1 (3)'.
