Government Not Committted In Any Way REPLY TO BUSINESSMEN

WELLINGTON, This Day. A denial that the Government was m any way committed in the matter of the proposed manufacture of motor tyres in New Zealand was given by the Minister of Indnstries and Commerce, the Hon. D. G. Sullivan, in a letter to the Associated Chainbers of Commerce which had made representations to him on the subject. Mr. Sullivan said that the industry had been gazetted under the Industrial Efficiency Act and applications had been received from praetically all the major tyre manufacturers. All these involved various measures of Government aasistance, including tariff proteetion against United Kingdom produflts. No deeision had yet been made Ly the Bureau of Industry and the Government was not committed to any one applicant or to any degree of tariff protection or even the investment of Government funds. At its meeting to-day the Associated Chambers reaffirmed its opposition to the granting of any monopoly in tyre manufacture.
