MANAWATU RACES

"The BaTb.")

Review of To-morrow's Runners VERY GOOD FIELDS

(By

Due largely, no doubt, to the Wellington meeting commencing next Tuesday, the acc, eptances for the winter meeting of the Manawata K.C., which will be held at Awapuna to-morrow, are below recent years in number. Hawke's Bay stables will be represented by Tommy AtMns, Cletrac, High Grader Contact, Wykemist, Passion Flower, and Trailer. 11.30.— LADIES' BRACELET. Aube won a double so easily last Saturday that the half-brother to Toxeuma has every appearance of being the prime selection. Air Laddie failed to show up in the race, in whdch All Spirit Qccupied a minor place. King Thomond and Tommy Atkins are outside possibilitiee, and the Cletrac must, on condition, be given a fair chanoe. The other trio are wathout oredentials. The best backed may be ATJBE, CLETRAC and ALL SPIRIT. 12.15.— FLAXBOURNE HURDLES. Yalpai is useful, bnt without recent form, though track reports say he is lit and well. Tout le Monde should be one of the best backed, despite the fact that he has failed to come up to early promise. High Grader, on Hastings form, ia hard to recommend, but it may be said that he has impraved a little since then. Contact thas seaeon has failed to run further than twelve furlongs and, also, heavy tracks are not to his liking. Sporting Song^ at 9.5, reads well, but Otaki and True Shaft hardly appeal. The favourite may come from TOUT LE MONDE, SPORTING and YALPAL

12.44.— MANAWATU HUNT CUPMiss Pango has won over country and lier sccond last week to Aube shows her in racing trim. Tangled was only a moderate third last Saturday, but the race should benefit him. Dozie as racing poorly. Taura Lad will not be over-rushed. The Ranger should be a better horse for last week's outing, when his condition gave out half a niilo from home. Hunting Boy is unsound, otherwise he would be winning in better company than the present. The other pair are px*actiically unknown, which does not say they have not a chance, for Sleepy was an instance last week of one of this kind winning. The best backed may be MISS PANGO, TANGLED and THE RANGER. 1.23.— AWAPUNI STEEPLECHASE. Manawatu, winner of the H.B. Steeplecha/se, should be a better horse now ihan when attaimng that position, the samo applying to Riotous, who won the second day at Hastings. Forest Glow, from the sapie stable as Riotous, ds a decided consideration. Lucidus has been racing fairly well in the Auckland district. Iliuminagh hardly ap-. peals, but Brigadore's sUowing in the Wanganui Steeplechase entitles hani to i-espect, as on that occasion he was in front of the winner, Clarion Call, when ho fell. Wykemist will not surprise if suceessful, „as he is a very fit horse, but he has uo liking to boafded fences sucn as hen-coops and post aua rails, Battiegaund was not started at Hastings, but during hda two weeks' here put in some solid work, leaving a very lit geldiug. Padnos will be bracketcd with the last-named, The betting may favyur BRIGADORE, LUCIDUS an(| MANAWATU.

2.3,— PALMERSTON NORTH HANDICAP. A good sort is Taitoru, who has dono exceptionally well this last six months in handic^ps. Red Manfred cannot be passed over. Gay Boy ds not what could be termed reliable. Rona Bay is consistent and able for any kind of going. International, on recent form, has the appearance of developing into a firstcluss handjcap horse. Be Grand may pop up and surprise once again. Gay Eebel has had a meteoric rise this laiat few months, going from maiden class to a dead-heat (wdth Day Wind) in an open handicap last Saturday. Tail Light is useful but hardly weighs up to the present class. Three that mav be fancied on fhe machine are GAY EEBEL, INTERNATIONAL and TAITORU. 2.41.— MILSON HANDICAP. Airing is due any day. The H.B.bred Quadroon may want a race-r-he is , now trained by L. Wilson at Awapuni. Flying Chief gave exceptional promise > earlier in the tseason. Eoyai Feast, if 13 in hia, best mood, Avould be a consideration. Old Survey in the sunimed iooked like developing into a useful sort, but I5 he has not raced of late. Winsome Lu, in her last start was suceessful iiu open company. Te Huia, at Wanganui, wou Iat his last endeavour. Dawning Light has had a reoocurrence of her bleediug - trouble. Silver river ia only moderate Iat best, Of the others Silent Acre ancj Patagonia, may do best. The favourites I; look ldke being WINSOME LU TE HUIA and AIRING. ? 3.20.— McRAE HANDICAP | Pukeko is in exceilent trim and has 5 been racing most consistently. Notium Ihas his work cut out on the 8.12 mark, but Red Manfred, if reserved for this I3 race, would be far from » friendless. Catalogue is, 1 thinlc, better over a ^ longer distance. Lady lna must be re- | spected. Alby has not ra>eed aince EasI ter. Grand Jury does not favour so l short a course. Passion Flower, at 51bs. | above the mindmum, reads eneouraging- | ly. International, Airing, Coroboree 3 and Winsome Lu have all other engagefe ments as well, Mister Quex is quite P capable of staging a surprise. Mavbe f the favourites will come from PTJKEI KO, LADY 1NA and PASSION 5 I-BOWER.

4.0.— BROADWAY HANDICAP. Trailer will have a track to his liking but 9.5 is going to put the aeid test on hds ability. Taken over to Hawera last May, Coroboree failed to handle the holding track_ so on that form will not be fa/voured by the going tomorrow. Terry was very unlucky at Hastings when he ran a close third to Trailer and, as she now meets that gelding on a couple of pounds better terms, may turn the tables. Corowa is overdue and when right is handy. Hunting Maid will be favoured by the state of the track, whi.ch will by thiis race be cut about a great dea]. Master Limond is well overdue. Chat has been racing fairly well in her recent starts without winning. Dawning Light is not fanoied, but Happy Hunting and Warehi, on the minimum, are at least possibilities. Recovery may be looked for from TERRY, COROWA and TRAILER.
